Sustainability reporting has become a well-entrenched practice in the mining sector. Failure to adequately live up to societal expectations is now considered a significant threat to the viability of the industry. There is general agreement that broad endorsement of standards for nonfinancial disclosure supports mining companies to improve their image, while conflicts persist. Because sustainability reports “speak” on behalf of sustainably operating organizations and may create socio-political effects, we explore the symbolic nature of SR. We conceive of SR as a (...) performative practice to research how it interferes with the world that it seeks to represent. Our case study research suggests that conformity with global templates is not an end in itself but might create below-compliance effects if a common interest in mining is developed in local arenas that avoids clarification of impacts and maintains ambiguity over responsibility. Not so long ago, the idea that analytic philosophers would be taking panpsychism seriously would have been hard to believe. That is because in its early, logical positivist, stage, the analytic movement earned the reputation of being militantly anti-metaphysical. But analytic philosophy has come a long way since the heyday of logical positivism; and, in fact, the dialectic of recent debates on the mind–body problem among analytic philosophers has pushed many of them in the direction of panpsychism. In this paper, (...) I want to explain how this has come about and take a look at some of the versions of panpsychism that have emerged. This will involve running through a quick history of debates on the mind–body problem since about 1960, focusing on how panpsychism has been proposed as a promising, though not unproblematic, way of breaking an apparent impasse that has emerged between more standard physicalist and dualist theories of mind. Along the way, I will also have occasion to comment on the prospects of panpsychism as a respectable scientific theory and how a number of scientists stand on this. (shrink)

A popular defense of physicalist theories of consciousness against anti-physicalist arguments invokes the existence of ‘phenomenal concepts’. These are concepts that designate conscious experiences from a first person perspective, and hence differ from physicalistic concepts; but not in a way that precludes co-referentiality with them. On one version of this strategy phenomenal concepts are seen as (1) type demonstratives that have (2) no mode of presentation. However, 2 is possible without 1-call this the ‘bare recognitional concept’ view-and I will argue (...) that this avoids certain recent criticisms while retaining the virtue of finessing the ‘mode of presentation’ problem for phenomenal concepts. But construing phenomenal concepts this way seems to not do justice to the phenomenology of conscious experience. In this paper I examine whether or not this impression can be borne out by a good argument. As it turns out, it is harder to do so than one might think. It can be done, but it involves somewhat more convoluted reasoning than one might have supposed necessary. Having shown that, I will end with a few brief remarks on what my argument means for attempts to preserve a physicalist account of consciousness. (shrink)

It has been argued that naturalizing the mind will result in the elimination of the ontology of folk psychology (e.g. beliefs and desires). This paper draws from a wide range of empirical literature, including from developmental and cross-cultural psychology, in building an argument for a position dubbed restrictive materialism . The position holds that while the ontology of folk psychology is overextended, there is a restricted domain in which the application of the folk ontology remains secure. From the evidence of (...) developmental uniformity and cross-cultural ubiquity of beliefs and desires, it is argued that the ontology (but not the principles) of folk psychology may be incorrigible. Thus, even if radically false as a description of first-order brain processes, beliefs and desires might be an unavoidable second-order brain process. Given that the domain of psychology is how humans think, if the above argument is correct, then beliefs and desires will continue to earn their rightful place in the ontology of any future psychology, in just the same way as any other scientific entity. The rate‐limiting step in the uptake and metabolism of Dglucose by insulin target cells is thought to be glucose transport mediated by glucose transporters (primarily the GLUT4 isoform) localized to the plasma membrane. However, subcellular fractionation, photolabelling and immunocytochemical studies have shown that the pool of GLUT4 present in the plasma membrane is only one of many subcellular pools of this protein. GLUT4 has been found in occluded vesicles at the plasma membrane, clathrin‐coated pits and vesicles, early endosomes, and tubulo‐vesicular (...) structures; the latter are analogous to known specialized secretory compartments. Tracking the movement of GLUT4 through these compartments, and defining the mechanism and site of action of insulin in stimulating this subcellular trafficking, are major topics of current investigation. Recent evidence focuses attention on the exocytosis of GLUT4 as the major site of insulin action. Increased exocytosis may be due to decreased retention of glucose transporters in an intracellular pool, or possibly to increased assembly of a vesicle docking and fusion complex. Although details are unknown, the presence in GLUT4 vesicles of a synaptobrevin homologue leads us to propose that a process analogous to that occurring in synaptic vesicle trafficking is involved in the assembly of GLUT4 vesicles into a form suitable for fusion with the plasma membrane. Evidence that the pathways of signalling from the insulin receptor and of GLUT4 vesicle exocytosis may converge at the level of the key signalling enzyme, phosphatidylinositol 3‐kinase, is discussed. Este artigo apresenta uma abordagem da cidade contemporânea do ponto de vista da contribuição das novas tecnologias digitais na constituição de laços sociais e na caracterização dos espaços urbanos. A análise de exemplos de interações cotidianas entre o meio digital e a cidade ilustra as considerações teóricas sobre novas formas de experiências do espaço social, mais precisamente a da ubiqüidade, na construção de novas experiências espaciais coletivas.

There is now a general consensus amongst philosophers in the values in science literature that values necessarily play a role in core areas of scientific inquiry. We argue that attention should now be turned from debating the value-free ideal to delineating legitimate from illegitimate influences of values in science, a project we dub “The New Demarcation Problem.” First, we review past attempts to demarcate the uses of values and propose a categorization of the strategies by where they seek to draw (...) legitimacy from. Next, we propose a set of desiderata for what we take to be a satisfactory solution and present a case study where conflicting sets of values clearly impinge on science, but where the legitimacy of their influence is ambiguous. We use these desiderata and the case study to illustrate what we take to be the strengths and weaknesses of current strategies. To be clear, our goal is not to answer the question we pose, but to articulate a framework within which a solution can be judged. (shrink)

This paper reports on the results of a survey of faculty members at California State University, Northridge in Los Angeles, California regarding their understanding of and familiarity with the concept of fake news. With very few studies published on the attitudes of teaching faculty at universities, this study is a unique approach to the issues facing educators, knowledge creators, and information specialists. The paper examines the origins of the term “fake news”, the factors contributing to its current prevalence, and proposes (...) a new definition. It also reports upon the attitudes that teaching faculty hold, and how they define fake news within their specific disciplines. Though nearly all surveyed faculty felt fake news was an important topic that impacted them professionally, the researchers also find that faculty across all disciplines and ranks, ages, and gender, hold widely differing conceptions of fake news. This lack of consensus may have future implications for students in particular and higher education in general and are worth exploring further. (shrink)

As some see it, an impasse has been reached on the mind- body problem between mainstream physicalism and mainstream dualism. So lately another view has been gaining popularity, a view that might be called the 'Russellian theory of mind' (RTM) since it is inspired by some ideas once put forth by Bertrand Russell. Most versions of RTM are panpsychist, but there is at least one version that rejects panpsychism and styles itself as physicalism, and neutral monism is also a possibility. (...) In this paper I will attempt to sort out these different versions with a view to determining which, if any, have a chance of breaking the perceived impasse. The unsurprising conclusion will be that there are a lot of challenges ahead for the RTM theorist. The surprising conclusion will be that it's not clear that pan- psychist RTM holds an advantage over the other versions in this regard. (shrink)

In the paper I attempt to close the gap between the tradition of contemporary radical democracy and that of the ideology critique of Critical Theory which is opened by Larry Alan Busk in his Democracy in Spite of the Demos. I argue that, on the one hand, it is not necessarily the case that the affirmation of the two ontological hypotheses Busk identifies as essential to radical democracy – that of the autonomy of the political and that of the universality (...) of doxa – need generate the ambiguities that his text critiques. On the other hand, I show how Adorno and Marcuse themselves remain committed to democracy, seeing socialization in the practice of the latter as fundamental to the development of critical-reflective consciousness. In the final instance, both radical democracy and Critical Theory can be seen to as committed to the same ideal of human autonomy, and equally useful resources for emancipatory thinking. (shrink)

El presente artículo se inscribe dentro de la tradición interdisciplinaria e intenta hacer un aporte en el campo de las relaciones entre psicoanálisis y fenomenología hermenéutica. Puntualmente, la contribución se centra en señalar la transformación que Winnicott realiza de la metapsicología freudiana. Para lograr este propósito, se asume como criterio de análisis de la obra de Winnicott las reflexiones fenomenológico-hermenéuticas de la lectura que P. Ricoeur hace de la metapsicología freudiana en _Freud: una interpretación de la cultura_.

Macrobio dedicó especialmente uno de sus textos, Saturnalia a la discusión de la obra y la persona de Virgilio –considerado tanto autoridad poética como filosófica y religiosa— aplicando como estrategia la comparación con la otra gran auctoritas de la Antigüedad: Homero. Si bien el punto de partida es la valoración de las habilidades literarias, la competencia se dirime finalmente apelando al plano de la moral y del respeto por la tradición, ambos contemplados en la práctica de la imitatio, fundamental en (...) la Antigüedad Tardía y en particular en la obra macrobiana. Já que integra a realidade como um todo. Assim, as várias áreas da ciência têm condições de articular-se através de estudos e pesquisas que privilegiam o tempo, pois é uma categoria que se constrói na multiplicidade e, por isso, expressa/condensa as inúmeras dimensões que compõem o real.

ABSTRACT We have several objectives in this article. Firstly, we return to the category of semiosphere due to its dialectical and polysemic character, but we also introduce some reflections in order to analyze more complex cultural productions. In this same sense, the category of internal and external semiotic border allows us to present the cultural, intercultural, and transcultural translation problems that are articulated with the dynamic changes of every culture. Secondly, we examine the category of culture and articulate it with (...) the no-culture, with the anti-culture, which would lead to propose three types of semiosphere: cultural semiosphere, noncultural semiosphere, and anti-cultural semiosphere, which introduce controversial aspects that must be considered. Cuando en el año 2000 el fondo documental de la Dirección de Inteligencia de la Policía de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (DIPPBA) es cedido a la Comisión por la Memoria se generó una enorme expectativa en relación con la posibilidad de encontrar allí evidencias del accionar clandestino ejercido por el Estado durante el período 1976-1983. Dichas expectativas se enmarcaron en un contexto de ausencia de políticas transparentes en materia de archivos, en las leyes de impunidad vigentes y en el (...) proceso inédito que implicó la desclasificación de un fondo de origen reservado. Hace 17 años que el archivo de la DIPPBA está abierto a la consulta pública. El abordaje desde la disciplina archivística permitió un conocimiento integral del fondo y de la entidad productora y el reconocimiento de la inteligencia como un importante dispositivo del terrorismo de Estado. Este trabajo presentará algunas afirmaciones e interrogantes que pretenden avanzar en el conocimiento de los contextos de producción de los documentos, tensionando representaciones en torno a lo que se entiende por archivo de inteligencia. “Female sexual dysfunction” is the type of contested disease that has sparked concern about the role of the pharmaceutical industry in medical science. Many policies have been proposed to manage industry influence without carefully evaluating whether the proposed policies would be successful. We consider a proposal for incorporating citizen stakeholders into scientific research and show, via a detailed case study of the pharmaceutical regulation of flibanserin, that such programs can be co-opted. Industry is a major source of funding for scientific research. There is also a growing concern for how it corrupts researchers faced with conflicts of interest. As such, the debate has focused on whether researchers have maintained their integrity. In this article we draw on both the history of medicine and formal modeling to argue that given methodological diversity and a merit-based system, industry funding can bias a community without corrupting any particular individual. We close by considering a policy solution (...) that may seem to promote unbiased inquiry but that actually exacerbates the problem without additional restrictions. (shrink)

In recent years the social nature of scientific inquiry has generated considerable interest. We examine the effect of an epistemically impure agent on a community of honest truth seekers. Extending a formal model of network epistemology pioneered by Zollman, we conclude that an intransigently biased agent prevents the community from ever converging to the truth. We explore two solutions to this problem, including a novel procedure for endogenous network formation in which agents choose whom to trust. We contend that our (...) model nicely captures aspects of current problems in medical research and gesture at some morals for medical epistemology more generally. (shrink)

En el presente trabajo se desarrollarán algunos avances del grupo de investigación Feminización de la Extensión Crítica, el cual forma parte del Grupo de Trabajo Extensión crítica: teorías y prácticas en América Latina y el Caribe del Consejo Latinoamericano de Ciencias Sociales (CLACSO). Este grupo tiene como objetivo hacer visibles algunos invisibles que sostienen y reproducen la división social, técnica y sexual de la práctica extensionista, utilizando dos estrategias: 1- constituir la extensión universitaria en objeto de análisis y; 2- revisar (...) su corpus teórico desde las categorías propuestas por los feminismos academicistas y populares. Se presentarán algunos resultados preliminares obtenidos a partir de la lectura sintomal (leer un texto o un corpus teórico no solo por lo que dice sino también por lo que omite o silencia), lo que permite la elucidación crítica de los sesgos sexistas en el interior de las propias prácticas y construcciones teóricas para posibilitar reconceptualizaciones y aportes. Se incorpora además una nueva estrategia de abordaje: el análisis de la implicación subjetiva, para permitir el despliegue de lo opaco, para poder así actualizar la extensión crítica latinoamericana y caribeña y continuar recorriendo, con pasos renovados, los caminos de la extensión critica que ya fueran marcados por otrxs. O propósito desta publicação é divulgar as atividades desenvolvidas no âmbito da linha de pesquisa Formação, Trabalho, Instituição, através da qual se articulam várias iniciativas de investigação que vêm sendo realizadas, em especial, junto ao Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas e Curso de Mestrado em Serviço Social da PUCRS e ainda com a equipe do Projeto Integrado "Urbanidade e Cidadania: processos de formação e instauração de saberes ", que reúne pesquisadores e bolsistas da PUCRS, UNISINOS e UFRGS, com apoio (...) financeiro do CNPq e da F APERGS. Ao oferecer ao público resultados de investigações em andamento, está se apostando na idéia de que a pesquisa e o próprio pesquisador constituem-se antes de tudo como processo e não como algo acabado. Em outras palavras, pretende-se de alguma maneira evidenciar que o conhecimento, o domínio e as competências indispensáveis para atingir descobertas significativas, através da pesquisa, supõem uma formação que, gradativamente, vá instrumentando o futuro profissional com as ferramentas exigidas para o desempenho de tal métier. É dentro desse espírito que neste número incluímos textos elaborados pelos diversos pesquisadores envolvidos, independente do status acadêmico de cada um. Materializa-se, portanto, a concepção de que tanto a pesquisa quanto o pesquisador são produtos de um processo que envolve um trabalho de cunho pedagógico bastante atento e moroso, já que o tipo de cumplicidade que se estabelece entre ambos está intimamente associado com o rigor do conhecimento científico resultante dessa interação. Eis, pois, a principal explicação para os diversos graus de aprimoramento dos textos aqui publicados. Seus autores possuem níveis de capacitação significativamente diferenciados, em relação ao métier de pesquisador: desde o bolsista de iniciação científica ou de aperfeiçoamento, o mestrando e o mestre, até o professor-pesquisador - que desenvolvem suas investigações a partir de certos referenciais propostos pela linha de pesquisa referida - além dos pesquisadores cujos artigos se relacionam com a temática em questão, mesmo que com outras orientações teórico-metodológicas. Tal diferenciação é também reforçada pela inclusão de autores franceses, reconhecidos internacionalmente, cujos textos foram traduzidos para esta publicação, por se constituírem suportes teórico-metodológicos1 importantes para as pesquisas desenvolvidas pelos vários subprojetos vinculados à linha de pesquisa. O presente número da VERITAS reúne a maioria das palestras proferidas por professores e pesquisadores da PUCRS e de outras universidades, junto aos Cursos de Extensão que foram realizados em 1994 e 1995, na PUCRS.*Um autor, uma abordagem: Pierre Bourdieu. *Um autor, uma abordagem: Jürgen Habermas. * Tempo: uma categoria, várias abordagens. Tais cursos foram organizados com o intuito de aprofundar alguns dos pressupostos epistemológicos que embasam as investigações que venho desenvolvendo, juntamente com uma equipe, as quais se articulam à (...) sublinha de pesquisa "formação, trabalho, instituição". Nessa perspectiva, o foco de interesse desses eventos centra-se no referencial teórico-metodológico de autores - Pierre Bourdieu e Jürgen Habermas - e na categoria de análise de caráter universal - o tempo – enquanto fundamentos indispensáveis ao ato de pesquisar. Essa publicação é mérito, em primeiro lugar, do diretor dessa revista que em vários momentos instigou-me a encontrar os meios para realizar esse empreendimento. Em segundo lugar, dos palestrantes que aceitaram produzir um texto sobre o assunto que haviam abordado há alguns meses atrás. Também, é mérito das pessoas que manifestaram interesse em obter o texto das palestras que integraram esses eventos, o que assegurou o ânimo para se concretizar esse trabalho. E, obviamente, é mérito da equipe de bolsistas* que atua junto aos subprojetos que estão em andamento. Por isso, aproveito a oportunidade para expressar a todos os meus sinceros agradecimentos. Presentación de las Memorias del I Foro Interno de Estudiantes de Filosofía.

The standard philosophical definition of placebos offered by Grünbaum is incompatible with Cartwright’s conception of randomized clinical trials. I offer a modified account of placebos that respects this role and clarifies why many current medical trials fail to warrant the conclusions they are typically seen as yielding. I then consider recent changes to guidelines for reporting medical trials and show that pessimism over parsing out the cause of “unblinding” is premature. Specifically, using a trial of antidepressants, I show how more (...) sophisticated statistical analyses can parse out the source of such effects and serve as an alternative to placebo control. There are some philosophical questions that can be answered without attention to the social context in which evidence is produced and distributed.ing away from social context is an excellent way to ignore messy details and lay bare the underlying structure of the limits of inference. Idealization is entirely appropriate when one is essentially asking: In the best of all possible worlds, what am I entitled to infer? Yet, philosophers’ concerns often go beyond this domain. As an example I examine the (...) debate on mechanistic evidence and then reevaluate a canonical case study in this debate. I show that for the assessment of actual evidence, produced in a world that is far from ideal, omission of the social aspects of medical epistemology leads philosophers to draw the wrong lessons from cases they take as paradigmatic cases for their views. I close by arguing that social epistemology provides an avenue to incorporate these complications and provides the necessary framework to understand medical evidence. (shrink)

Private companies provide by far the most funding for scientific research and development. Nevertheless, relatively little attention has been paid to the dynamics of industry‐funded research by philosophers of science. This paper addresses this gap by providing an overview of the major strengths and weaknesses of industry research funding, together with the existing recommendations for addressing the weaknesses. It is designed to provide a starting point for future philosophical work that explores the features of industry‐funded research, avenues for addressing concerns, (...) and strategies for making research funded by the private sector as fruitful as possible.
